PROFESSIONAL DATA

Naroa Agirre is the top Spanish pole vaulter of all time. She is from San Sebastián and has an imposing physique: she is 1.77 metres tall and weighs 62 kg.  She has recently become a reference point in female pole vaulting in Spain. Her physical power also makes her an outstanding long jumper.

z. Naroa Agirre was an outstanding sportswoman from an early age, particularly in the long jump at the time. In Junio category she began to tyrain with Ramón Cid, the Spanish Athletics Federation’s present manager of the jumping sports area.

At the age of 18 she went to live in Barcelona to study her subject of interes, Environmental Science, and it was here that she began training at the Barcelona High Performance Centre and improving her personal records. Her pole vault trainer in Barcelona was Hans Ruf.

Around this time, Naroa Agirre broke the psychological barrier of the 4 metre jump and became one of the 4 top women pole vaulters in Spain.

She returned to San Sebastián in 2001 with a pole vault personal best of 4.10 metres. She then began to train with her boyfriend of the time, now her husband, Jon Karla Lizeaga. She continues training with him at present, together with the doctor Ricardo Jiménez and the weight trainer Jose Luis Parro.

In the 2002 season, with 23 years of age, totally dedicated to pole vaulting and with her new trainer, Naroa Agirre succeeded in jumping 4.40 metres and became the Spanish outdoor pole vault champion for the first time (in 2000 she had been the Spanish indoor track champion), beating the champion of the time Dana Cervantes. In that season she traveeled to the European champiobnship in Munich and finished 10th.

In the 2003 season, Naroa Agirre continued to improve and set a new Spanish pole vault record, jumping 4.45 metres. During that season she travelled to the world championships in Paris, although she went out at the qualification stage.

In the 2004 season, Naroa Agirre continued to progress, reaching 4.47 metres. In that season she also gave an excellent performance at the Athens Olympic Games, jumping 4.40 metres at the first try in the finals, finishing in sixth place and winning an Olympic finalists diploma.

Although she did not succeed in beating her personal best in the 2005 season, Naroa Agirre later continued progressing and broke the 4.50 metre barrier, becoming a world elite pole vaulter with this figure. In that sason she came 7th at the Gothenborg world championships.

The 2007 winter season was excellent for Naroa Agirre, as she succeeded in improving on her Spanish pole vault record four times, achieving a 4.56 metre jump. Unfortunately at the European championships in Birmingham she was knocked out when her pole broke. However, in spring and smmer, alghouth she attained a high level in all the competitions, always jumping over 4.40 metres, she did not succeed in making any specially high jumps. At the Osaka world championshiops she went out in the knockout rounds with a jump of 4.50 metres.

Apart from being a great athlete, Naroa Agirre has also appeared on TV as an actress and she is currently playing the role of a pole vaulter in the series Goenkale, on the Basque TV channel ETB1.
